The Unexpected Journey
British International School Shanghai, Puxi, Restell,Arthur – 11
lright everyone, we’re here!” I stepped out of the car and stared at the building, and then I
gasped in amazement! This day was just getting worse. The museum was tiny. It was only
about the size of a doctor’s waiting room but really dirty, it took me a few seconds to
realize that I wasn’t looking at the museum. Then I looked behind me and there was a huge museum. It
stretched down the road for miles. The boiling sun reflected off my face. Sweat was dripping off my chin.
It was the hottest day ever, and I was stuck in a minivan with my family for two hours driving to this
museum. So far I was having the worst day of my life, until something incredible happened.
I’m Logan, and I’m 14. I’m staying in a hotel far away from here.We only came to this place because my
dad has a job interview with this new company that just opened recently. We are really excited and hope
he gets this job, but we have to wait a couple of hours until he can be interviewed. That’s why we are at
this museum, the museum of the Terra-cottaWarriors. I was with my mum, dad and sister at the
Terra-cottaWarrior museum in Xi’an. My sister is called Sophie, she is 8 and always gets into trouble. She
always runs off when she sees something she wants or likes and she moans a lot of the time when she
doesn’t get something. I went inside and there was a huge room, full of clay men lining up for miles. My
sister ran up to the wall and peered down at the life-like men.
“What are they doing?” Sophie asked me.
“Building the tomb for Emperor Qin.” I was learning about the Terra-cottaWarriors in school, that’s why
I know a lot about them.
“Where did mum and dad go?” She said.
“Oh, I think they went to the souvenir shop to get something. We’ll be fine.” Or at least I though we
would. As soon as I said that, Sophie bolted to the other side of the room.
“Sophie! Wait for me!”
“Ahhhhh!” I heard a high pitch scream from across the room. Oh no, I saw Sophie hanging off the edge of
the wall, her feet dangling in the pit of the Terra-cottaWarriors. I tried to grab her hand but I couldn’t
reach.
“Logan! Help!” She screamed.
“Sophie. How did you get down there?” I asked.
“Well, I saw horses so I went to see. I bent over the rail but I leaned too far and fell.”
I stepped on the handrail and grabbed her hand. I tried to pull her up but I couldn’t. Oh no. I slipped off
the rail and fell in the pit with Sophie. I closed my eyes until I hit the ground.
“Huh?” I said confusedly. I hadn’t hit the ground yet. I knew something was wrong so I opened my eyes.
To my surprise we weren’t in an old dusty pit, we were falling, falling endlessly.Although it didn’t feel like
we were falling, it felt like we were floating.
“Wow, look at this Sophie!” I said, making it sound cool.
“Logan! What’s happening? What’s going on?” She shouted.
“I was about to ask the same question, I think we’re going back in time. I mean, look at what’s going on
around us, all of these things happened way before this time!” Suddenly I heard people talking. Then I saw
something. Something moving.
“Look, Sophie! I see people!” I shouted to her.
“Oh yeah, I can see them too!” She shouted back.
Then it all became clear, we were in the year that the Terra-cottaWarriors were still building the tomb
for Emperor Qin.We finally stopped floating and I landed softly on the sandy, dirty ground. There were
thousands of men, digging in the dirt. The sound of pickaxes clashed against the rocks.
